Roots & Shoots members gushed over images, found in the Daily News, of a cute monkey. Check out the link below to gush a little too. In addition, the Meatless Monday campaign continues. All Roots & Shoots members have officially signed the Meatless Monday petition, and a few enthusiastic members have taken on additional petitions to advocate our case even further. Theresa and Arlene are busily working on a Thank-You card for Russel Simmons, a well-known animal advocate.

11/7/11 - Meeting:
Roots & Shoots started its Adopt-a-Turkey drive. This drive's main goal to save the life of even one turkey during the Thanksgiving season when countless turkeys are slaughtered for a single holiday meant to celebrate unity and thankfulness not the vast amount of food any single person can consume.
In addition, Izabela has started a petition for Meatless Monday. Roots & Shoots hopes to initiate Meatless Mondays in Saint Saviour High School. The movement can help individuals reduce their carbon footprint, improve their health, health the plant and reduce meat consumption by 15%.
10/24/11 - Great meeting. Today we discussed the harsh realities facing the future of our planet caused by factory farming. Thanks to:

6/13/11 - End of the Year Party - Special thanks to Mrs. Coduri for her presence and participation. A big Whoot Whoot to our year long members: Yanitza, Raven and Jennifer. Vegan Cupcakes were from Teany.
Recap: Your work this year has transformed our school into a recycling machine, helped shelter animals with our needs drive and also helped save 2 turkeys from slaughter through our Adopt A Turkey fundraiser! Thank you for your commitment and look forward to building on what we achieved next year.

4/12/11 - Congratulations and thanks to Raven, Jennifer, and Yanitza for all your hard work. We dropped off all the donations to Social Tees Animal Rescue today. Robert the owner thanked us profusely. He was amazed by our generosity.
3/21/11 - Sorry I haven't been updating, but we're here now to report on some of the great things we've been accomplishing.
- Thanks to the efforts of Raven, Jennifer and Yanitza we've completely updated the schools recycling system to a modern, 21st Century school. No more confusing 15 different garbage pails. PROPER RECYCLING. Excellent job ladies.
- Our 2nd annual Shelter drive begins tomorrow 3/22/11. Our girls have been hard at work decorating boxes for homerooms. The drive will support the great work of the Social Tees Animal Shelter. The drive will continue until Enrichment day, 4/13.
I want to thank as always, Mrs. Coduri for her assistance and will post more soon.
11/15/10 - Scheduling note: We will be switching meeting days to Mondays! Please make note.
Great meeting an work by our team. Yanitza, Raven, Khaila and Jennifer. We got our 1st Annual Adopt-A-Turkey drive under way and it appears to be quite a success. Many students and teachers have commented on your work. Excellent job.
We also continued improving on our on going efforts to inform our community of the importance of recycling. We explored and experimented with better signage concepts and will continue to work on improving the message so that more people understand the importance of their actions.
10/26/10 - Continuing progress was made today on our efforts to inform our community on the importance of recycling and being kind to species other than our own. Thanks to Sophia, Yanitza, Jennifer, Taylor and of course Mrs. Coduri for your efforts.
We had a moment to watch Dr. Jane on 60 Minutes. You can catch the clip here.
Kinda lame interview since it didn't focus on Dr. Jane (or the amazing monkeys!) enough and celebrated the interviewer way too much. Still, Dr. Goodall gets some props and that's all we care about. WHOOOT WHOOOOT!!!!
10/19/10 - Nice job by Sophia, Yanitza, Khalia and Raven. We researched some local shelters that we want to help out. Also began planning our recycle movement designed to inform our community one bottle at a time.

Welcome back:
3/18, 3/19 - Well done Ashley, Charity, Maria, Jackie for pasting the school with our new Department of Sanitation Recycling decals. Also getting out Pope Benedicts message condemning cruelty to animals. The Pope emphasizes that the mis-treatment of animals in such ways as fois gras practices and caging chickens is inconsistent with biblical teachings. The more informed our community is, the easier it will be for them to make informed and smarter decisions about what they eat and what they are contributing to. All this is important information for our community. Thanks also to Gissel, Jessica and Jennifer for offering to lend a hand.
At our 2/24/09 meeting We watched an inspirational video from Jane at TED. Take a look for yourself. Thanks to Jackie, Ashley and Jennifer for working to help improve our schools recycling capabilities. We went to the Department of Sanitation website and ordered a bunch of free stuff to help educate our community on the responsibilities we all have to help our planet. See the Department of Sanitations thank you email to us here!
We also talked about our future plans and what we want to accomplish. We watched a video from Animal Aid about Meatless Mondays (Watch for yourself!) and discussed getting together a petition. Jackie also had a great idea about making items like jewelry or bags from recyclable objects to sell to raise money to adopt a chimpanzee from Jane Goodalls chimp guardianship. Nice work ladies!
12/21/09 - Conclusion of our needs drive. Thank you to all who particpated in making it quite a success. Here is a link to the Empty Cages blog thanking us for all our efforts. Read it and be proud.
12/16/09 Meeting - Thanks to Anetta, Jessica, Ashley, Maria, Jackie, Gissel for helping out .
- another great Jane Goodall video - adopt a orphan monkey.
- Talk about needs drive. Badger students and pet stores.
- collect any donations in boxes throughout the school
- recycling research
12/9/09 Meeting
- Nice job done by all. Ashley, Ayesha, Jackie, Jennifer, and Gissel for scouring the buidling for boxes and decorating them.
- Look on the Recycle Center Page and follow the link to try to find free recycling receptacles for the classrooms.
11/18/09 Meeting:
- Jane Goodall on The Daily Show.
- Cultural Harmony Day - Unfortunately we could not pull off being represented. That should not stop us. Root's N Shoots encourages all those participating to try to choose cruelty free recipes for Cultural Harmony Day. Consider "Going Cold Turkey"!
- Awesome job done by Charity, Marias, Jennifer and Jackie decorating our Needs drive boxes. We have only 6 more to decorate.
- Thanks to Ilin and Aneta for scouring the building to collect data on the state of recycling in our classrooms.
- Great job by Ashley creating our fact of the week about Turkeys. Check it out on the bulletin board on the stairs.
10/28/09 Meeting - We need more people showing up to meetings!
We talked briefly about the needs drive for the Animal Shelter. We are planning on having a drive to collect donations for animals in need. Please help out as much as you can in your free time. We want to have a box for donations in each homeroom by the first week in November. We can do this. Everyone chip in and help.
Awesome job by Maria and Jennifer for getting our Weekly fact sheet about Pandas together. We need to get our message out there! Maria and Jennifer also learned how to use Photoshop and our wiki in interesting ways. So if you are interested in learning Photoshop and wikis, come to the meetings.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Here are the issues we discussed tackling at the last meeting (09/30/09):
- Recycle bins/bags for all classrooms - Ilin
- Contact a local animal shelter to find out how we can help - Maria
- Fundraising - (lunchbox idea...)
- Our presence at Cultural Harmony Day (November 25)
- Weekly fact sheets around the school about the plight of a different animal.
- Meatless Mondays, more vegetarian/vegan options in the cafeteria - Tara
- Saint Saviour Garden
- Trip to Farm Sanctuary
We had a great meeting and you all had a ton of great ideas. I congratulate you for joining and look forward to working with you helping animals, people and the environment together. As we continue throughout the year we will expand this space to include all the amazing things we accomplish together. We will explore using this space as our "home base" for information about the group. It's a great way to learn how wiki's work and how we can make them work for us. For example: I've uploaded the Roots"N"Shoots handbook to the Pages and Files section of this wiki. At the top right hand corner of this page, click on the Pages and Files link, then click the "All Files" section on the left side of the page. Then you will see a file called rshandbook.pdf. Browse through when you have some free time.
